As I began to reply I thought I might suggest some of your blog posts as wonderful concrete examples of what it looks like not to judge student behaviour but to instead be curious to understand what is getting in the way and what might support learning. The only problem was that while I was browsing back through your posts i have ready many times, I got utterly absorbed again – liking so many that I couldn’t decide which one to choose. So I think I have to encourage others to browse and explore: https://katenonesuch.com
particularly the posts grouped under “motivation” wonderful ones to shift our immediate reactions into new responses.

I once had a student who told me, several weeks after joining the class, that her teacher had tied her left hand to the desk to force her to write with her right hand. The student had been afraid that I also would tie her hand down–but she came anyway, full of trepidation and anxiety. The “daily expectation of violence” is part of so many lives. If nothing else, that awareness helps me be less judgmental when I see behaviour that doesn’t look like “proper student behaviour.”
