I understand, and feel the fear: If I talk about violence, I will be expected to make it go away. Or, if I mention that I know how bad experiences get in the way of learning, I’ll be flooded with horrible stories I won’t know what to do with. But I find that my worst fears do not come to fruition.

When I try to protect myself by refusing to open the can of worms, it doesn’t work. No matter how cool the subject, no matter how scrupulously I stay focused on the material I’m teaching, if I treat students with respect, they will talk to me about their lives, and bam! the violence is out in the room when I am least expecting it. Better to deal with it on my own terms, in my own time, rather than waiting for it to explode.
